The Unity Council
Mission at a Glance
The mission of The Unity Council is to help families and individuals build wealth and assets through comprehensive programs of sustainable economic, social and neighborhood development.
Founded in 1964, The Unity Council has taken a comprehensive approach to the challenges presented by the financial crisis, with over a dozen programs working in tandem to build wealth and assets for families and individuals who need it most. For example, The Unity Council’s Homeownership Center (HOC) has been on the forefront of this crisis on a community level, successfully counseling over 1,100 Oakland residents in 2010. In addition to foreclosure prevention, we provide the prospective first-time homebuyer with comprehensive bilingual home-buying workshops, financial fitness classes and housing counseling. This homebuyer education trains participants to improve their budget and credit profiles, shop for a loan, get a mortgage loan and maintain their home and finances after purchase. The prospective homebuyer is introduced to private and public affordable mortgage lenders, Federal/State/Municipal mortgage assistance programs, real estate brokers, title companies and other homebuyer providers. We provide the tools for mortgage readiness and a successful home purchase within the financial resources of the homebuyer.
Homebuyer Counseling Classes
In order to purchase a home listed on HomeHub©, a homebuyer must complete eight (8) hours of HUD-certified homebuyer counseling classes. These classes will provide valuable information to help you navigate the home purchase process. We are proud to be a HUD-approved provider of these classes. We look forward to working with you on achieving your goals.
