Situated along the I-880 corridor, Union City has been described as “an oasis from the hustle and bustle of its big city neighbors, yet pulsing with life”. Just 20 minutes north of San Jose and 30 minutes southeast of San Francisco, with easy access to Oakland International Airport and San Francisco International Airport via AirBART shuttles. Union City Transit and AC Transit offer excellent local transportation, and the Dumbarton Express transports riders across the bay to the peninsula.
The Old Alvarado Farmers Market showcases local artists, musicians and performers, in addition to beautiful fresh produce, each Saturday morning, 9-1pm, in Old Alvarado Park, Smith Street at Watkins Street, all year round, rain or shine! Union Landing is the largest retail entertainment center, offering 100 acres of quality retail, entertainment and dining, as well as the Century 25 movie theater.
The New Haven Unified School District has many “Distinguished Schools” and “Blue Ribbon Schools” and is committed to the best in education. There are seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools in this district. Chabot Community College and Ohlone College also serve this area.
Parks and Recreation
In addition to numerous parks, sporting fields, swim centers and community centers, Union City has a state-of-the-art Sports Center, with an aerobics room, child-care center and a 12,000 square foot gymnasium. Hikers will want to explore the 20-mile system of trails within Garin and Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Parks. While the trails are not paved, many are suitable for bicycles. Jordan Pond has naturally reproducing populations of largemouth bass, bluegill and sunfish. The Park District also plants channel catfish in the pond once or twice a year. Anglers aged 16 or older must have a state fishing license.
