Near the south end of the San Francisco Bay Area, just north of the Silicon Valley, Newark is situated between Interstate 880 at its eastern boundary with Fremont and State Route 84, which runs through the city and continues across the Bay via the Dumbarton Bridge to Menlo Park. Served by AC Transit and the nearby Fremont and Union City BART, as well as Altamont Commuter Express and Amtrak rail systems. The city of Newark is proud of its slogan, “the best kept secret in the Bay Area.”
The NewPark Mall is the main shopping center, including such stores as Target, Sears, JC Penny, Macy’s and Big 5. Enjoy a bite to eat and take in a movie at the Newark Cinedome 7. On Sundays from 9-1pm check out the popular year-round Farmers Market at NewPark Mall for the best in food, entertainment, family fun and the freshest produce.
Newark Unified School District has one high school, one junior high school and three elementary schools, dedicated to “inspiring and educating all students to achieve their full potential and be responsible productive citizens.”
Parks and Recreation
Newark has 15 parks and sports play facilities, such as the Newark Community Center, the Newark Senior Center and the George M. Silliman Community Activity and Family Aquatics Center, which opened in 2004, offering fun for the entire family. The Natorium includes four separate pools, including a long river pool with two curving water slides and a warm water spa.
